In order to be able to treat patients according to the latest scientific findings and developments, interdisciplinary

research projects are indispensable. The departments involved work together with renowned companies and institutions, such as the Fraunhofer Institute. This research concerns all areas of treatment, from the refinement of surgical techniques to the further development of epitheses and materials research.

Some research results of the past years:
// Navigation device
In cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute, a navigation device was developed at the Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with which the implants can be precisely inserted even with a small amount of bone.

// Active eye epithesis
A second generation of an active eye epithesis

with a synchronous blink was developed in 2006. The first researches in this field started already in 1999; the basic stage is still in progress, in a few years such active epitheses will be part of everyday life for the patients.

// Research on new surfaces
In order to optimize the peri-implant conditions, intensive research is being conducted into a new surface treatment of the implant magnets.

// Study on quality of life
A study on the perceived quality of life of patients provides information on the needs and desires that are addressed to epitheses.

// 3D epithesis

We also use 3D software to improve epithesis planning. This enables us to simulate the future epithetic restoration in advance.

// CAD/CAM technology
Using CAD/CAM technology (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing), epitheses are produced in selected cases by implementing a digital workflow.

// Patient specific implants
With this CAD/CAM technique, PSI's (patient-specific implants) were used for the first time anywhere in the world to create a magnetically anchored
supply are made possible.

// Stigma-free epithesis

Together with the University of Antwerp, the epitheticians are researching stigma-free products in the production and effect of a designed epithesis. With this study, a product feature is designed that encourages patients to outreach themselves to the public as epithesis carriers.



Active eye epithesis
// The active eye epithesis enables the blinking of the eyelid to be synchronized with that of the healthy eye. It comprises a body that provides sufficient space for electronic parts, a battery and a small motor.
The amplitude range of the eyelid movement is regulated via an infrared interface; the blinking movement is triggered by an impulse transmitted by the healthy eye.
During the construction of the second prototype of the active epithesis, patients and research team had a lot of fun together.
